Tips & Tricks: Hair Accessories

Have fun with an unexpected headband placement. Start with a soft unstructured bun, gather your hair into a low, loose chignon, then place a decorative headband just above it for a slightly Grecian effect. An updo paired with a cool accessory worn in an unexpected way makes your look more fun!

Austin Bats

Austin Bats

With as many as 1.5 million bats calling Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue bridge home, now is the perfect time to head downtown to see the largest urban bat population in North America. Each evening around sunset, a black cloud of bats and their young pups emerge from under the bridge consuming tens of thousands of pounds of insects! Call the Bat Hotline at 512-416-5700 ext. 3636 for more information.

Tips & Tricks: Colored Hair

Tips & Tricks: Colored Hair

It's important to use a color safe shampoo and conditioner. And if you can, try to go a couple day between washes. You can also check your water source and make sure you're not washing your hair in hard or partially chlorinated water. For swimmers, completely saturate your hair in regular water and/or conditioner before hitting the pool, your hair won't be able to absorb as much of that chlorinated water. A clear gloss applied after a color service will help seal color, as well as add shine!

Austin Swimming Spots

Austin Swimming Spots

Looking for a place to cool down during these hot Texas summer days? Head to a swimming hole near you! Most of the spots listed above charge a small fee for entry/parking (under $10 total per person). Remember tat you should never take glass containers to a public or natural swimming area and stay safe! Canadian Cold Weather Tips

Canadian Cold Weather Tips

* No ice scraper? Pull out your least favorite credit card, hold at a 45 degree angle and start scraping! * Stay dry! Even when the body is cold, it puts off moisture vapor so pull out those dry fits from your summer closet to wear as a bottom layer to help pull moisture away from skin. Be sure to wear shoes that will not soak up the moisture from melting snow and ice. * Your body burns what you eat and drink to help keep your warm, so turn on the oven and break out the rolling pin!

Tips & Tricks: Ponytail

Tips & Tricks: Ponytail

Try a segmented ponytail for 2014! Pull the top section of hair from the hairline to the crown into a ponytail and tie with an elastic. Next, loop a small piece of hair around the base and pin it into place, before repeating the process until you reach the ends. Finally, push each elastic up until the hair bulges. It's as easy as that!

New Year Traditions

New Year Traditions

Throughout history, civilizations around the world developed increasingly sophisticaed calendards, typically pinning the first day of the year to an agricultural or astronomical event. In Egypt, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius. The first day of the Chinese new year occurred with the new moon after the winter solstice.
